The actual move…

Thanks to those of you who helped pack up my stuff, or gave moral support or helped pack/unpack the truck. To answer your questions, yes, I’m still alive, I made it here in one piece, and yes, Kansas did suck. The drive took 23 hours and the truck was brand new.

At one point, though, Mapquest put us on a windy little road in Colorado that would have been the perfect staging area for a horror flick. No lights, no stars, 48+ miles of not being able to see more than 20 yards in front of the truck. Creepy! We started playing a game of “if I were the director of this horror flick then I would…” That took up about 20 miles.

Love to you!

I actually have some fond memories of Kansas from my mid-college road trip to Colorado.

    Three vivid memories.

    1. Somewhere near the Kansas/Missouri border, as I entered the state, I shared a hunting camp with some random local who fed me luscious ham steaks in his trailer.

    2. As I rode across the very, very long state, there was a hot, southerly prevailing wind. It was strong enough that I basically spent the entire trip tilted to my left, about 15% off the vertical. I can remember this viscerally; the dry heated smell of the wind, the sensation of constantly adjusting my weight against the wind; the hurrrm and pungent oil-scent of the engine.

    3. Also enjoying the wind were these little roadside birds, which in groups of three or more would hurl themselves into the airstreams of cars as they approached; I guess it was kind of like surfing.
Y’know, motorcycles don’t have much of an airstream. I got thwacked on the head by one of the little buggers. No injuries to either of us, just a lot of surprise on both sides.

Was in One Stop Bead… today with a friend (I can’t bead worth $&!#) and identified your beads and found out (although I also knew from Heidi) when you’d be back. Sorry I didn’t get to see you off. Had relatives in 2 different emergency rooms that day.Miss you already.Love,
    Abby

Abby: I missed seeing you, too. Has everything settled down with family at all?

Steve: I think that first memory sounds familar to me. I wonder if you told me that beforehand. Meanwhile, though, David and I were driving through Kansas and we saw this cloud of dust up ahead of us. We were convinced it must be a dust storm. Turns out that it was a stink storm. I’ve never smelled anything that bad. We went from full daylight to something that looked like dusk in a matter of seconds. I still don’t know what it was. A slaughterhouse maybe? A pig farm? I have no idea.

Colorado is like that — just got back from seeing my sis off to the Middle East.

The place looks nice and the blog is a great idea!
